Choosing between the 2027 Honda CR-V’s gas and hybrid powertrains comes down to one practical question: how many kilometres do you drive, and where do you drive them? Ontario commuters split between short in-town errands and longer highway stretches, and that split changes which CR-V makes more financial sense. Here is what the ratings say.
Natural Resources Canada rates the 2027 CR-V’s gas and hybrid trims separately for city, highway, and combined fuel consumption. The tables below line up those ratings against an estimated annual fuel cost, based on Ontario pump prices this fall.

The hybrid’s biggest edge shows up in town. At 6.0 L/100 km city versus 9.1 L/100 km for the gas Sport trim, the hybrid burns notably less fuel on stop-and-go routes, where the 181 hp electric motor and regenerative braking do most of the low-speed work.
That gap narrows once you’re cruising. Highway ratings sit closer together, 6.9 L/100 km hybrid versus 7.6 L/100 km gas, because at steady speed both the 2.0 L engine and the 1.5 L turbo are already running efficiently. The hybrid still rates ahead on the highway, just by a smaller margin.
A few tenths of a litre per 100 km barely shows up at the pump on a single fill. Multiply it across a year of driving, though, and the gap turns into real money.
With Ontario regular gas running near $1.80 to $1.87 per litre this fall, the gas Sport trim’s 8.4 L/100 km combined rating works out to an estimated ~$2,520 a year. The hybrid’s 6.4 L/100 km rating lands closer to ~$1,920, a difference of about $600 annually for a typical driver. The TrailSport Hybrid, at 6.7 L/100 km combined, still saves roughly $510 a year over the gas Sport trim.
The two-motor hybrid system pairs a 2.0 L engine with a 181 hp electric motor for 204 hp and 247 lb-ft combined, ahead of the gas engine’s 190 hp and 179 lb-ft. That torque advantage shows up as quicker throttle response pulling away from a stop.
Hybrid trims add a Sport drive mode alongside ECON, Normal, and Snow, and swap the gas engine’s CVT for an electro-CVT built around the two-motor system. The extra hardware adds mass: the EX-L Hybrid weighs 1,766 kg against 1,651 kg for the gas Sport trim, about 115 kg more to carry.
The gas CR-V’s 1.5 L turbo keeps things simple: a conventional CVT, no battery pack to manage, and a lighter curb weight. For drivers who tow occasionally, that simplicity comes with a real capability edge. Gas CR-V trims tow up to 1,499 lbs (680 kg), compared with 999 lbs (453 kg) on every hybrid trim.
That’s the trade-off in plain terms: hybrid trims save fuel and add torque, while the gas CR-V pulls more weight behind it.
If most of your driving happens in town, stopping and starting on short trips, the hybrid’s city rating does the most work for you: 6.0 L/100 km against 9.1 L/100 km for the gas Sport trim.
If your week includes long highway stretches, the hybrid still rates ahead in fuel economy, just by a smaller margin, 6.9 L/100 km versus 7.6 L/100 km. For drivers who also tow a trailer or boat, the gas CR-V’s 1,499 lbs (680 kg) rating against the hybrid’s 999 lbs (453 kg) may matter more than the litres saved.
Drivers focused mainly on running costs, regardless of daily distance, come out ahead in a hybrid trim: EX-L Hybrid, Sport Hybrid, TrailSport Hybrid, and Touring Hybrid all rate at or under 6.7 L/100 km combined.
The 2027 CR-V’s fuel-consumption ratings give Ontario drivers a clear way to weigh gas against hybrid, from city and highway numbers to the annual cost gap between them. The right powertrain depends on how and where you drive most.
